Michael, thank you for sharing this. I'm going through an odd transitional period and this poem really struck me today. Enjoy your break from screens! :)
From a purely selfish perspective: oh no! I will sorely miss your presence on Substack.
But from the perspective of understanding the necessity for us each to practice the art of extreme self-care, please do what you need to feel well Michael.
Please also know your amazing writing gifts are deeply appreciated and valued. Be well my writer friend ♥️🙏🕊
I love the imagery in this, really powerful. And congrats on your year on Substack, my experience here has improved since you arrived :) Enjoy your screen break & see you on the other side!
Wonderful poem Michael, it seems to express that dark night of the soul perfectly. I will miss you on here, I always enjoy our 'conversations' but you are doing a wonderful thing. Experimenting with ourselves is all we truly have, the journey of discovery, seeing through our illusions. Screens have been quite detrimental to our consciousness I believe. I hope you discover more of yourself, I am happy for you. It takes courage. I bow with respect and wish you well. May your pen and notebook be your constant companion. ❤❤🙏
Happy birthday Curious Platypus! Enjoy your time off and bake a cake.
Your poem came a surprise, a pleasant one, and I really loved the lines "I smell the rotting corpse of my hope / and shoo the gulls that peck at its remains. "
Thank you, too, dear! To all you bring both as a writer and reader. I’m glad you shared this one. I feel it in my bones, blood and guts. And in the times I have stood at the edge of the ocean, letting the waves race across my feet! And then drag back out, washing away all my footprints. All trace of my journey out there. Enjoy your screenless time!!
“I taste the salty sorrows / of having lived for tomorrow.” Beautiful!
Happy, happy one year, my friend. I am deeply grateful to have found you and your writing here. You’re a bright light that stands out even among a whole lot of bright lights. I clearly am among many who’ll miss you while you’re away.
May this cleanse be a joyful way of living for today. ♥️
I love your poem, very reflective and relatable. Will miss you here on Substack while you're on break. Wish you a restful and restorative time off, mate!
Enjoy your time away. I hope it brings you peace.
This is really nice Michael. Enjoy your cleanse!

Such a beautiful strong 💪 poem, you do really surprise me with your writing.
I will miss your writing on here 🙁.
Does life choose us or do we choose life?
Do we really have free will to do what we love with our time or are we bound by life’s demands.
I’m still trying to work this out.
The only thing I’ve worked out is that whatever moment presents I must be fully in it. I love my curious platypus 😘
